New Generation of Electric Cylinders of the LM3S Series from SEW-Eurodrive

SEW-EURODRIVE presents the third generation of its electric cylinders. The new LM3S series has been fundamentally redesigned and can be combined with various motors. A key feature of the series is the further developed oil lubrication system.

The LM3S series electric cylinders are ideal for applications requiring high forces, rapid movements, precise positioning, and a long service life. Compared to their predecessors, they have undergone extensive technical improvements. They offer significantly increased speed and maximum force while maintaining nearly the same installation dimensions. Their mechanical and electrical connections are also largely backward compatible.

The new drive unit is available in three sizes with 8, 15, and 26 kN feed forces and stroke lengths up to 1200 mm. It is particularly well-suited for pressing and forming processes, joining and connecting operations, and positioning mechanisms. Due to its high force accuracy, it is also ideally suited for use as a welding gun drive.

A key feature of the LM3S series is its advanced oil lubrication system. This ensures exceptionally smooth operation and precise force control, eliminating the need for relubrication. Thanks to the oil lubrication, the drive is virtually maintenance-free and boasts a very long service life. The new sealing system of the electric cylinder and the optional spindle pitch P = 10 (in development) enable speeds of up to 750 mm/s. The cylinder unit can be combined with a servo motor from the SEW-EURODRIVE CMP, CM3C, or CM3P series, each available in two motor sizes.

This offers advantages in terms of flexibility, dynamics, and efficiency. Furthermore, it opens up a wide range of options regarding encoder interfaces, electrical connection technology, and integrated brakes. Users can choose between a slim, series-mounted motor and a significantly shorter, parallel-mounted version with belt drive. In the latter case, the belt ratio can be adjusted, allowing for higher motor braking torques. This significantly increases the potential holding forces – especially in vertical applications. The linear unit is also available separately for mounting on third-party motors.

The LM3S series electric cylinders are fully compatible with the components of the MOVI-C® automation system. Project planning can be carried out using the familiar, freely available “SEW-Workbench” project planning software. Direct selection and ordering are also possible via the DriveConfigurator in SEW-EURODRIVE’s online support. Commissioning is performed using the intuitive MOVISUITE® software. The electronic nameplate of the MOVILINK® DDI single-cable technology further simplifies installation.

The series will be available from the end of 2025 through the SEW-EURODRIVE sales network.
