In-Series Diagnostics (ISD) makes it easy to access diagnostic data from devices in a safety system without special equipment or designated cabling. Users can troubleshoot machine safety systems, prevent system faults, and reduce equipment downtime. This innovative, next-generation technology is exclusive to safety devices from Banner Engineering. ISD-compatible devices achieve the highest levels of safety (Category 4, PL e, or SIL CL 3 safety ratings).

  • Prevent and Reduce Unplanned Downtime

In-Series Diagnostics gives machine owners and operators greater insight into the health and performance of their equipment, making them less reliant on outside experts to solve system problems. Users can monitor the status of each device in their safety system in real-time, identify the location and nature of any potential problems, and receive alerts if a critical event does occur, so equipment can get back up and running as soon as possible.

  • Simple, Cost-Effective, and Easy to Implement

The technology that makes In-Series Diagnostics possible is embedded in the safety devices and communicated using the same cables, connectors, adaptors, and inputs that connect the devices to the safety controller. This eliminates the time, hassle, and expense of running designated cabling between each device and the control panel in order to access diagnostic data. Users can add, move, or remove safety devices as needed and then easily error-proof the entire safety system prior to deployment.

  • Easy Access to Detailed Diagnostic Data

Data is collected from up to 8 ISD chains and up to 32 devices in each In-Series Diagnostic chain. Using an HMI or similar device, users can view the status and location of each device and drill into the data to determine the unique tag value, internal temperature, voltage, and other device-level details. System alerts notify staff if a monitored door has been opened, an E-Stop button pressed, or any other critical event has occurred.

In-Series Diagnostics, the next generation of safety protocol and devices from Banner Engineering, is now better than ever. Now with autoDetect ISD, the system is able to automatically identify and implement safety devices in an ISD chain, which makes deployment fast, dynamic, and easy, all of which save you time while providing more opportunities.

In-Series Diagnostics overlays device data on top of the safety OSSD signals manufacturers know and depend on. ISD sends alerts and device information to your PLC for each device, delivering the highest level of safety and advanced diagnostics, and allows you to connect up to thirty-two ISD devices on a single four-pin cable.

Banner currently provides two native-ISD devices, and an adapter to add any other safety devices to an ISD chain. First are the SI-RF RFID safety door switches, useful for door detection and alignment applications. And second are illuminated e-stops, which add bright indication to further simplify troubleshooting and reduce downtime. If you require safety devices beyond those, the ISD-Connect allows you to adapt nearly any other non-ISD safety devices to the ISD system. Use it, for example, to incorporate locking safety switches into your ISD chain, add a surface-mounted e-stop to a systems panel, or even integrate non-Banner safety devices you may currently use.

Banner provides two safety controllers with ISD built-in, depending on the complexity of your needs. First is the SC10, which is ideal for smaller safety systems. Second is the XS26, which offers extended capabilities for larger safety systems. The SC10 is an all-in-one unit, supporting two ISD chains for a total of 64 ISD devices. In total the SC10 can support up to 70 safety devices, and it features two safety outputs. The XS26 on the other hand is expandable based on your needs. It can support up to eight ISD chains totaling 256 ISD devices. Combined with standard safety inputs, the system can support up to 394 safety devices, and has up to 68 safety outputs.

Shifting our focus from hardware to software, ISD system configuration and deployment is made easy because of the intuitive PC software and “AutoDetect ISD”. AutoDetect ISD automatically identifies ISD devices on each ISD chain, which expedites initial system setup of up to 256 devices to just a few clicks. Beyond initial setup, AutoDetect ISD also makes dynamic safety systems possible because end users get notified anytime the ISD chain is modified. Use it, for example, on production lines that feature sub-assembly systems that are movable or not always in the same configuration. Or use it on mobile cart trains that frequently add, remove, or swap out carts.
