Safety and Security in Transformation: How Pilz Can Help

August 12, 2025

Safety and Security in Transformation

Your route to safe, compliant machinery

No Safety without Security! In the connected world of automation, Safety and Security are now a unit: one is no longer possible without the other. The networking of production and industrial plants and new normative requirements mean we are in the midst of a change process.

It used to be sufficient to ensure Machinery Safety, but today there are new dangers lurking. Attackers can penetrate automation and control systems through the network and manipulate them. Machinery Safety will mean Safety and Security in future – to protect people and to protect machinery. The Machinery Regulation will also take this into account from early 2027. Security will thus become an essential requirement.

It’s important to look at the issue holistically and at an early stage. Pilz can provide efficient support with the complex problems of Machinery Safety. A safe and economical machine is always the goal.

What role do legal requirements play?

The EU Commission has further developed the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC to improve the level of safety and to stay abreast of the new technological developments that come with digitization and networking, such as Industrial Security and artificial intelligence. Application of the new plant and machinery requirements in accordance with the EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230 becomes mandatory on 20 January 2027.

Other specifications, regulations and standards must also be observed in addition to the Machinery Regulation. Examples are the series of Security standards IEC 62443, ISO/IEC TS 63074:2023 and ISO 27001. Other regulations such as NIS-2 and, in the foreseeable future, the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) will also be mandatory. Now is the time to prepare for the upcoming changes. Pilz is happy to provide support!
