Government of Canada Renews Support of Perimeter Institute Through 2029

A new five-year funding agreement through the Strategic Science Fund will bolster Perimeter Institute’s – and Canada’s – scientific future.

Perimeter Institute is pleased to have been named as one of the successful applicants in an update on the Government of Canada’s new Strategic Science Fund (SSF), announced recently. Perimeter was one of 24 third-party science and research organizations selected through a competitive, merit-based and transparent process, informed by the advice of an independent expert review panel.

“Our government is proud to announce the inaugural recipients of funding under the new Strategic Science Fund,” said The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.

“With this investment, we are supporting organizations working in a multitude of areas, including the development of novel cancer treatments, climate change, reconciliation and Indigenous-led science, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, as well as organizations that are inspiring the next generation of scientists and researchers.”

The SSF represents a new funding mechanism for Perimeter Institute, but the continuation of a long history of partnership between the Institute and the Government of Canada. The new funding will extend from 2024 through 2029, following the completion of Perimeter’s current funding agreement.

“We are grateful for the Government of Canada’s steadfast support of Perimeter Institute and our vision of creating the world’s foremost centre for research, graduate training, and educational outreach in theoretical physics, right here in Canada,” said Perimeter Director Robert Myers.

“Ongoing investments from our federal and provincial partners provide the stability needed to unite other visionary partners and to continue bringing top talent to Canada to answer some of the most fundamental questions in physics.”

While Perimeter Institute strives for research breakthroughs that will transform Canada’s future, SSF funding will also secure the Institute’s ongoing efforts to attract and develop new generations of scientific leaders, to increase public literacy and understanding of science, and to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion at the Institute and in physics more broadly.

“We’re committed to acting as Canada’s national hub for research in theoretical physics,” said Paul Smith, Perimeter’s Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer. “Our collaborations – at the institute, across the country, and around the world – build Canada’s scientific future and contribute to its prosperity. We appreciate this show of confidence and remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring Canada’s place as a global leader in foundational science.
