Worldwide, there are nearly 50 lightning strikes every second, almost 1.4 billion strikes per year. Overvoltage due to lightning strikes or switching operations is one of the most common causes of electronic damage, to which the process industry is very vulnerable. Surge protection concepts are therefore crucial to plant and personnel safety. The new M-LB-2000 system from Pepperl+Fuchs―the experts in explosion protection―provides just such protection.

The one-piece devices are mounted on a standard DIN mounting rail, are approved for applications up to SIL 3, and are certified in accordance with ATEX and IECEx up to Zone 1. Additionally, the M-LB-2000 is UL-certified for Div. 1 and can be installed in intrinsically safe control loops.

The M-LB-2000 can be used as a superior alternative to standard terminal blocks, as it also features a loop disconnect function. Terminal blocks in marshalling cabinets can be replaced by the slim, 6.2 mm modules with no additional space required. This cost-efficient simple surge protection can be easily operated without tools. The integrated loop disconnect function allows for easy maintenance and commissioning, which simplifies troubleshooting in the event of a fault.

The surge protectors offered by Pepperl+Fuchs are specifically designed for process control loops and therefore are designed to protect against transients surges of up to 20 kA.

In process engineering plants such as refineries with exposed building parts or extensive water management systems, surge events can cause devastating damage. Installation of the M-LB-2000 surge protection system from Pepperl+Fuchs provides peace of mind, along with safety for both plant and personnel.
