POSITAL Introduces 20 mm IXARC Multiturn Magnetic Encoders – The Right Encoders for Tight Spots
XARC 20 mm Encoders

POSITAL has expanded its IXARC series of rotary encoders with a new line of 20 mm diameter multiturn magnetic encoders developed for motion control applications where installation space is at a premium. With a total housing length of just 31 mm, these compact units are POSITAL’s smallest multiturn encoders. They provide the full performance profile of the company’s other encoder products with significantly smaller footprint. Moreover, these tiny encoders are virtually maintenance-free, thanks to their battery-free Wiegand-based rotation counting technology.

The new encoders are based on POSITAL’s latest TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) sensing technology, offering up to 19-bit single-turn resolution combined with excellent signal stability and low power consumption. The sensing module is supported by an advanced signal processing ASIC, which provides precise interpolation and multiturn data handling while
minimizing power requirements.

As with other multiturn members of the IXARC family, the 20 mm models incorporate POSITAL’s Wiegand energy-harvesting system for non-volatile rotation counting. Each complete shaft rotation triggers a Wiegand pulse, generating sufficient electrical energy to power the internal counting electronics. This enables multiturn position tracking over a 16-bit range (65,536 revolutions) without the need for batteries or external power backup. Position data is reliably recorded, even if motion occurs when system power is unavailable.

The encoders are housed in corrosion-resistant stainless-steel enclosures and will be available with several solid and hollow shafts options. To facilitate integration in tight mechanical situations, the connector clip allows cable exit in either radial or axial orientations. Communication interfaces are based on BiSS C and SSI protocols, ensuring compatibility with a
wide range of industrial motion controllers and drive systems.

With their compact dimensions, low energy requirements, and robust magnetic sensing design, the new 20 mm IXARC multiturn encoders are well suited for applications such as robotics, medical instrumentation, compact actuators, and precision mechatronic assemblies.

Availability: Sample quantities will be available beginning Q1 2026, with broader release to follow. The new models will be presented at SPS (Germany), Automation Fair (Chicago), and iREX (Japan).

About FRABA and POSITAL
POSITAL is a supplier of advanced industrial position sensors used in a wide variety of motion control and safety systems. The company is also an innovator in product design and manufacturing processes and a pioneer of Industry 4.0 (Industrial Internet of Things/IIoT), offering customers the benefits of built-to-order products combined with the price advantages of mass-production. POSITAL is a member of the international FRABA group, whose history dates to 1918, when its predecessor, Franz Baumgartner elektrische Apparate GmbH, was established in Cologne, Germany to manufacture relays.

Since then, the company has played a trendsetting role in the development of rotary encoders, inclinometers and other sensor products. POSITAL has a global reach with subsidiaries in Europe, North America and Asia along with a worldwide network of sales and distribution partners.
