ABB Invests More than CAD 130 Million in R&D and Manufacturing in Canada
  • A new site designed to support future growth in key sectors such as utilities, renewable energy, buildings and infrastructure across Canada
  • ABB’s largest investment in Canada to date will combine existing plants in Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu to increase production capacity
  • The new Montreal site will support more than 600 existing jobs, with new positions being created as production expands.
  • ABB has invested approximately US$275 million in its Canadian operations over the past ten years.

ABB announced on August 5 that it will invest more than CAD 130 million (approximately USD 100 million) to expand research, development, and manufacturing capacity for its advanced energy protection and grid resilience technologies in Canada. The investment in Montreal, Quebec, will consolidate ABB’s existing factories in Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu into a new site. This will enable ABB to meet growing demand in key growth sectors, including utilities, renewable energy, transportation, residential, and infrastructure projects across Canada.

The new 340,000-square-foot manufacturing and R&D site will be more than 33 percent larger than the two sites it replaces and will incorporate cutting-edge digital and production automation technologies. The consolidation of ABB’s operations in Iberville and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu will bring more than 600 employees from manufacturing, research and development, engineering, testing, and support functions to a single location. Additional jobs will be created as new product lines are added and production increases in the future.

“Our investment will support our future growth in Canada as demand continues to grow in grid resilience, power distribution, renewable energy, as well as transportation, buildings, and infrastructure projects,” said Khalid Mandri, President of ABB Installation Products. “The teams at our new state-of-the-art facility will deliver products and innovations that help power businesses and homes across the country. Along with recent investments in the U.S. and Europe, the opening of this new site will be a key part of our global growth strategy.”

The new site, scheduled to open in mid-2027, will be located in the South Shore region of Montreal, Quebec. The building will incorporate clean, energy-efficient electrical equipment and heating systems designed to reduce energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions by more than 95% compared to the two existing facilities.

The project is receiving funding of 16 million Canadian dollars (12 million US dollars) from Investissement Québec.

Today, more than 80% of the solutions sold in Canada by ABB’s Installation Products division are manufactured or assembled locally, using 70% locally sourced materials, including 100% Canadian steel and aluminum.

This is ABB’s largest investment in Canada to date. Over the past decade, ABB has invested approximately US$275 million in its Canadian operations to support advanced manufacturing, innovation, and workforce development. These investments include the modernization of key facilities, the integration of leading-edge automation technologies, and the expansion of local capabilities and production capacity.
