Within an electrical distribution system, there will be hundreds to thousands of electrical connections. These connections have the potential of being improperly installed or become loose over time which result in unexpected downtime. To minimize the risk unplanned downtime, the industry standard is to schedule thermographic audits across a site, including hazardous areas, which are labor-intensive procedures. The result is just a snapshot of connection health despite the costs and risks. Application Engineer Yzhi Alexander discusses how, with advancements in sensor technology, a continuous thermal monitoring system can now be installed within critical electrical equipment. A 24×7 thermal monitoring system can reduce the potential of unexpected downtime. In turn, this data can be uploaded to Eaton’s Brightlayer Industrial platform for trend analysis of electrical equipment which can help improve reliability and extend equipment life while keeping workers safe.
